“I’m a short, curvy woman who loves style, but grew to hate shopping over the years. It wasn’t really the shopping, but the frustration of spending (more like wasting) money on clothes that looked better on the rack than, well, on my rack. (You’re welcome for yet another donation, Goodwill.)

It seemed nearly impossible to match figure-flattering clothes to my funky, eclectic tastes. I didn’t want to wear boring “separates,” yet I still wanted to look polished, especially as my career has become increasingly public, with events, TV appearances and meetings coming up more frequently. As my career took off, I found myself unconsciously pushing success away—or dreading the opportunities that I should have been thrilled about—because I didn’t know what the heck to wear.

Getting dressed for an event could send me into a tailspin of self-doubt, which would always be a bummer.

The night of my book launch, for example, which was at Saks Fifth Avenue in New York City, had me on the verge of tears. I should have been celebrating as I prepared, but instead I was panicking. (Not that I’d have wanted anyone to know that.)

Thank goodness for Lisa. After that rock-bottom moment, I decided enough was enough. I handed the sartorial reins to Lisa, and that’s been one of the best moves ever!

In less than an hour she made sense out of my entire dilemma, and nailed several genius solutions.

Lisa put into words what I was trying so hard to accomplish: that I needed a “sophisticated creative” look that would match my colorful personality. After all, I work in media and as an astrology columnist. I don’t need a power suit! But I’m also newly 40, so I don’t want to look like I’m trying to pass for 25. With Lisa’s help, I learned I could add interest through well-placed texture, a little sparkle, well-proportioned patterns, or by pairing say, an edgy T-shirt with a specific jacket cut. Lisa taught me which colors were “wow” and which were “ow” and how I could comfortably stop hiding behind all the boring black that had crept into my wardrobe. She gave awesome suggestions for which stores to shop at (from high-end to low) and which brands were cut best for my figure.

Lisa even gave me a detailed document with pictures of outfits for a casual day, a lunch meeting, a date, or an event. It’s become a shopping “bible” for me. I printed it out, hit the stores and wow: I can honestly say I enjoyed shopping for the first time in 15-20 years. I left with about 10 new items that I’ve happily kept in rotation ever since. I now have a template for what I’m looking for when I shop, in terms of color, silhouette and so on.

The stress is gone and the fun is back!

I now feel like I can express my true personality and style through my appearance—instead of just through my writing. I feel prepared for anything, whether that’s running into someone at a coffee shop and not feeling schlumpy or making a national TV appearance. Now, a few inches of fabric will no longer hold me back from expressing my full potential in the world. Thank you, Lisa!”
