Do you have a closet full of clothes but still have “nothing to wear”?
Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
It’s actually quite common and something I see all the time working with my one-on-one clients.
It tends to happen as a result of buying “one off” pieces – items that we are attracted to but we don’t have anything to wear them with.
And when we shop like this – buying one off pieces with no thought as to what we are going to wear them with – it creates closet chaos.
Which then turns into daily dressing meltdowns and I have nothing to wear-itis.
My client K was knee deep in this kind of situation actually when she contacted me.
She wanted my help because she was starting a new job in a completely new field, and she needed me to go through her wardrobe with her to put outfits together for that new job.
She said she had a closet full of clothes and was struggling with putting complete looks together with what she had.
After having her fill out my new client style assessment, then meeting her at her home to chat in more detail and then tackling her closet, the problem became very clear.
Yes, she did have a closet full of clothes (and really great pieces at that), but nothing really went with one another!
I told her the bad news was that she was going to have to go shopping and get some new pieces to create complete outfits.
The good news was, she wasn’t as “clueless” (her words, not mine) about putting outfits together as she thought.
Because of how she was approaching her style and shopping – by buying one off pieces – it was no wonder she was struggling to put outfits together!
For example, she had TONS of billowy silky blouses, but nothing to wear on the bottom with them!
She had all of these great blazers and jackets, but nothing to wear underneath them (billowy blouses don’t work under blazers).
And so on and so forth.
So, my point in telling you this story?
I want you to know that if you’re finding that you are constantly struggling when it comes to getting dressed and putting outfits together, it may not be that you don’t know what you are doing.
It could very well be that you don’t have the proper ingredients to create them.
It’s kind of like cooking.
You can’t make a complete meal without the proper seasonings and spices, and you need the side dishes too!
So, my advice to you is this…
The next time you are considering buying that great top, cool pair of pleather leggings, or playful dress – think about what you could pair it with.
And if you don’t have something in your current wardrobe, keep shopping until you can create a complete outfit.
Or at the very least, don’t hang it in your closet until you’ve gone out shopping another day to get your other pieces to complete it (and make sure you think about how you can wear that item multiple ways).
You can check out the report I did for my client for some inspiration.
Here’s the thing…
Style isn’t “effortless” as some people would have you believe.
That kind of thinking just makes women feel badly about themselves when they feel like they can’t do it.
It takes work, patience, and practice.
And of course, planning.
You can do this!
A great place to start is with a Capsule Wardrobe which is a collection of pieces that can be mixed and matched with one another to create a variety of outfits.
